Fresh off their recent appearances in Mother Jones, BuzzFeed, The Week, HuffPost TV and Sal Cincotta’s Behind The Shutter, same-sex wedding expert and president of GayWeddings.com Kathryn Hamm and wedding photographer Thea Dodds will be in Washington DC on Thursday, June 19 at the Human Rights Campaign doing a panel entitled Capturing Love: The Face of Modern Weddings and Emerging Traditions, which will focus on the limitations of traditional notions of gender roles in wedding rituals and photography; the ways in which understanding the dynamics of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) couples can open new doors for straight couples; and how the mainstream industry is receiving this niche market.
Joining them on the panel will be Kyle Mihalcoe of WeddingWire Inc., the nation’s leading marketplace serving the $100+ billion wedding and events industry; Bree Ryback, founder and editor of Capitol Romance, a popular blog offering unique and nontraditional wedding inspiration in Washington, DC; and Noël Gordon, a Foundation Coordinator for the Human Rights Campaign who works on issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS, racial justice, and transgender equality. Moderating will be HRC Director of Foundation Program Strategies Jay Brown, who was instrumental in repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the defeat of the Federal Marriage Amendment.
The HRC program will also feature an LGBTQ photography show; a reception and book signing for the release of Hamm and Dodds’ groundbreaking new book The New Art of Capturing Love (Amphoto Books/Penguin Random House), the first book on LGBTQ wedding photography; and portrait sessions for couples and families. Also celebrated will be the 15th anniversary of GayWeddings.com and the recent groundbreaking advances in LGBT marriage in the US.
