WASHINGTON, DC – March 5, 2013 –  Veteran photographer Thea Dodds and wedding innovator Kathryn Hamm, authors of the groundbreaking guide Capturing Love: The Art of Lesbian & Gay Wedding Photography  (Authentic Weddings, $32.95) are excited to announce that Capturing Love is now available in print and digital formats from retailers including Barnes & Noble, Lulu, and Amazon.   Additionally, Capturing Love is now available to libraries, brick and mortar stores and other retailers through Ingram, with a release through Apple’s iBooks and Barnes & Noble’s NOOK digital stores forthcoming. The book has garnered significant and positive reaction in the world of photography as well as with consumers and the media, and offers a new appreciation of what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to creating spectacular engagement and wedding portraits for gay and lesbian couples.

As interest in and momentum for the book grow, the authors have detailed several upcoming appearances to promote Capturing Love, including:

  • A book signing and two appearances as a featured speaker by Hamm at the annual Catersource Tradeshow & Conference at Las Vegas’ Mirage Hotel on March 10-11;
  • Dodds’ participation in the WPPI Wedding & Portrait Photography Conference + Expo at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Hotel from March 11-13, including her attendance as an invited studio audience member at the CreativeLIVE presentation on March 11 at the Mothership Studio, and her appearance at the WeddingWire booth on March 13 and she will also be at the ProDPI booth on March 13 at 1pm;
  • An appearance by Hamm at a Capital Area Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce event in Arlington, VA on March 19;
  • A book party featuring Hamm in Phoenix, AZ the week of March 25;
  • A book party featuring both authors in Washington, DC, at the Human Rights Campaign’s Equality Center on April 9; and
  • Hamm’s attendance at Princeton University’s Every Voice: A Princeton University Conference for LBGT & Ally Alumni from April 11-13, including a presentation, Reimagining Weddings with Kathryn Hamm, on March 12.

“Hamm and Dodds emphasize how important it is to capture authentic images that reveal who the couple is and how they feel about each other. The marvelous selection of photographs that illustrate this book do that so well that I felt I was sharing the moment as I viewed them… [Capturing Love]’s message is imbued with the warmth and understanding its authors feel for this market, the advice is solid, and the collection of same-sex couple photography is the best I’ve ever seen.”  – Joan Sherwood, Senior Editor, Professional Photographer Magazine

Dodds, a New Hampshire-based wedding photographer, and Hamm, a Virginia-based same-sex wedding expert and educator, spent countless hours last fall exploring the notion that the current mainstream wedding photography resources available to photographers are insufficient in a changing marketplace, which now includes increasing numbers of same-sex couples.

Their conversation and realization led to the consummation of their own publishing firm, Authentic Weddings, and their first book, Capturing Love, designed to help photographers understand how photographing same-sex couples can be different from heterosexual couples even though they now share the same legal marriage rights in nine states (MA, IA, CT, NH, VT, ME, MD, WA) and the District of Columbia.

“I photographed my first gay wedding almost 10 years ago,” says Dodds. “And it wasn’t just the first gay wedding I’d worked; it was also the first gay wedding I’d ever attended! I had an absolutely amazing time, but during the course of the wedding and those that followed, I realized that photographing same-sex couples and photographing them well requires more than a ‘plug and play’ approach from the standard wedding playbook.”

“Simply put,” Dodds says, “what works for a straight couple won’t always work for a gay or lesbian couple. Weddings are changing, and photography education needs to change, too.”

Featuring stunning example photographs from 38 of the top gay and lesbian wedding photographers, and showcasing 46 same-sex couples, Capturing Love debunks the myth that “same-sex couples are just like straight couples” and can be photographed the same way. Through these examples, through personal stories about the couples photographed, and through detailed commentary from the authors, the guide provides a compelling new look at how couples are changing in the 21st century, and how weddings are changing with them.

“We are deeply grateful to the talented photographers and couples who have shared their inspired and diverse images of authentic love and commitment with us,” says Hamm. “We are excited to share our collaboration with the growing number of professionals, couples and loved ones interested in learning more about gay and lesbian weddings.”

“We have been completely floored by the response Capturing Love has received, including expressions of excitement, inspiration, and—even—tears of appreciation and empathy,” say the authors. “We had hoped that Capturing Love would resonate with the photographers for whom we created it, but we are equally thrilled to know that engaged couples and other aficionados of authentic love are smitten by this moving collection of loving couples.”
